ByteMate AI

With ByteMate AI, ByteMate can automatically reply in chat and adopt its own personality. Responses are posted directly in Twitch chat and use the currently selected chat identity (see the Account page).

Dashboard overview

On this page you set up ByteMate AI, define the personality, control replies on mention and random replies, and manage the $(ai ...) variable. Changes only apply after saving.

Activation

Enable or disable ByteMate AI for the channel in the first box. The feature requires a Premium Plus subscription for ByteMate.

Your mods only see this page with the ByteMate AI permission. In newly connected channels it is off by default, because the personality and the random reply rate apply to the whole channel; you can turn it on under Mod permissions on the Account page.

Personality

Describe the AI's tone and role for your channel in up to 2000 characters. If left empty, ByteMate uses the default personality (friendly, helpful, respectful, neutral tone, short and clear answers to chat questions).

Your personality is the only source of the tone. ByteMate adds no edge, irony or teasing you did not ask for: describe a friendly bot and it stays friendly, even when chat gets rough. Explicit prohibitions in your text – such as "never be insulting" or "never tell my viewers off" – are binding and override every other style instruction.

If you name someone for the AI to tease, that applies to that person only. The teasing does not move on to your viewers, a raider, or the channel you are shouting out.

Where your personality applies

Your personality applies to replies in your chat. Shoutouts, auto-shoutouts and raid messages always use the neutral ByteMate voice.

Those messages advertise someone else's channel — there is nobody in them who should be teased. There was a switch for this for a short while; it was removed again on 18 September 2026, because only one of its settings was ever safe.

Limits

No matter what your personality says, ByteMate will not send certain wording:

  • Insults aimed at a protected characteristic – origin, sexuality, gender, religion or disability – are always discarded. Twitch files these under Hateful Conduct.
  • Threats of violence against a person are always discarded. Rough wording about what is happening in the game is not affected.
  • Heavy insults pointed at a person are discarded as well, whether they are aimed at your viewers, a single chatter, or another streamer.

Shoutouts, auto-shoutouts and raid messages carry one extra rule: the AI does not address a single person there. Addressing the community as a whole still works, so "Go give them a look, you lot!" is still fine.

Crude language that is not aimed at anybody stays allowed. A deliberately rough bot still sounds rough – it simply no longer points it at people.

If a shoutout or raid message hits this limit, the message is not lost: ByteMate posts your normal shoutout message without the AI text instead.

Every AI reply also follows these rules:

  • Links only stay in if they lead to Twitch or appear in your current stream title. All others are removed.
  • A reply mentions at most three people with @.
  • The AI can't trigger chat commands like /announce or /pin – a slash at the start is removed.
  • If too many requests arrive at once, the bot posts a short notice instead of staying silent. Shoutouts then use your normal message.

$(ai ...) variable

Enables AI responses inside dashboard features such as commands, timers, alerts, and triggers. Example: $(ai Write a shoutout for {streamer}). Works only if ByteMate AI is enabled overall.

Replies on mention

When enabled, the bot reacts to messages where it is mentioned and posts an AI response. Works only if ByteMate AI is enabled overall.

You can also enable Send replies as /me. Replies are then posted as action messages (colored).

Random replies

The bot can occasionally join the chat without a direct mention and reply to random chatters. The probability per chat message is configurable (0 to 100 percent). Dashboard recommendation: 1 to 5 percent for occasional interjections without spam.

Save

Don't forget to save at the bottom of the page after making changes. The status shows whether there are unsaved changes.
